two knitting updates:

(1) the Water-colored socks are now done! i like them overall, but i think i may have made them too large. they're not snug enough around the ankle to stay up. if they're long enough, they too may end up being a gift for Dave. and speaking of Knitting Gifts For My Sweetheart...

(2) on Wednesday, Dave claimed a computer in the Noisy Lounge (so-called because conversation is encouraged, unlike the Quiet Lounge and the Study Lounge on the second floor of the Student Center) at SMCC, set down all of his Stuf (tm), and suddenly realized he needed to pee. not wanting to pack all of his things up again (and not wanting to lose his computer access) he left his stuff there and ran to the bathroom. when he got back, he thought something seemed 'off', but it took a few minutes to realize what it was.

his scarf - the one i made him, my first knitting project - was missing.

as he described it to me on Thursday, he freaked out just a bit. he looked around the chair, in back of the computer, wondering in vain if it had fallen. but it was gone. he started to scan the Lounge, people walking past, and miracle of miracles, he happened to see a young man come out of the cafe at the back of the room who had a scarf on that looked suspiciously familiar. he walked right up to the guy and said - in a fairly controlled tone of voice - "Nice scarf." when the kid agreed that it was, but looked a bit nervous, Dave went on "I have one just like it, and strangely enough it's gone. I'd left it right over there." he gestured to the computers. "My girlfriend made it for me. I know exactly how long it is and how many fringes it has. And I'd like it back now."

the kid gave it back and took off.

while part of me supposes i should feel a bit flattered someone liked it enough to steal, i'm happier that said person was too stupid to immediately run and stash it in their car. i would have been pretty devastated if Dave had lost it.

He should have gently tightened it about the young man's neck as he spoke. Not for long, mind you, but just long enough for the lesson to strike home, ;-)

this is the second time he's left stuff where people can get to it and had it walk. in his second semester there, he had $300 go missing from his pants when he left them hanging in his locker in the culinary students' locker room. i try very hard to love people, but i keep telling him that he just can't leave stuff lying around there, apparently. perhaps college kids just aren't wired to respect other people.

i was impressed with his calm, as related to me after the fact. i think i would have been more upset, myself. then again, he's a very big guy and he's scary enough when his face goes flat and he gets quiet, so he's probably put just enough into it to scare the kid and yet not end up having to talk to the security folks...
