IMHO, the point of the Ring was that some personality types would become corrupted by its presence easier than others... those who desired power over love. the hobbits aren't affected. even Pippin, who's an idiot, is only ensnared in the paladir through his curiousity. its a case of any personality trait becoming master over the others...)
