the maple in our front yard used to, long ago, have birds nesting in it. after years and years of no nests, this spring saw a robin building a home in it. my mom and i spent a few hours of the last two days weeding and spreading cedar mulch on the front flower beds. during pauses to chug iced tea, we observed Madam Robin; once we saw a tail sticking out toward the house, once a head.
i can therefore report that at least one mother changes directions while nest-sitting.

the day before yesterday, my father made his way acorss our yard to recover an orange plastic bag that the wind had blown into a corner near the fence. when he picked it up, there was a tiny baby bunny underneathe it, cowering.
this wasn't the end of baby rabbit follies. yesterday, one took fright at the back yard activity, scampered into our shed, and hid behind the lawn roller. my father saw him go inside, but couldn't find him once he'd bolted behind all the equipment. we left the shed doors open wide and went in for lunch, and afterwards my dad moved the tractor and lawn roller and couldn't find the baby. my mother had glimpsed the larger one hanging around, so we agreed it likely that Madam Rabbit came and got him out of there.
--
in short: moms are awesome, workaholic, generous, love-machines. happy Mother's Day to everyone on my list who is a mom (or acts like one), early.
*HUGE HUG*
